There are four types of nouns: Common Nouns, Proper Nouns, Collective Nouns and Abstract Nouns
A Common Noun can be a person, a place or a thing
Things that are named are Common nouns, for example
Proper Nouns
Proper Nouns always being with CAPITAL LETTERS
- Your name is a proper noun
- Indian Ocean is a proper noun
- South Africa is a proper noun
Abstract Nouns
An Abstract Noun refers to something we cannot see, touch or measure
- She gave her son love and he responded with respect and obedience
- The love/friendship/happiness of the girl
- She is full of joy/imagination/ambition
Note: Many abstract nouns end with some of the following suffixes:
ness: – Kindness
tice: – Practice
hood:- Knighthood
tion: – Concentration
Collective Nouns
Collective nouns are the name of a collection or a group of objects, people or creatures:
- a string of pearls
- a herd of elephants
- a bunch of flowers
